Our Strategy
Avocet’s motto is “lead from the front” – a military concept dating back to ancient times. Simply put, it means placing the most senior commanders on the front lines with their troops, a once common practice. How does this apply to the ship repair and modernization industry? In our industry, highly skilled technicians with decades of experience are often seen as prime candidates for promotion to “desk jobs” in management. This can create a shortage of skilled leadership where it is needed most: at the “front” – on the deck plates where production is accomplished.
Accidents rarely happen in the office – but they can occur in industrial work areas without experienced leadership present on-site. At Avocet, we delegate office tasks to administrative professionals as much as reasonably possible, freeing up employees with the most deckplate experience to stay on-site in production areas. This strategy best accomplishes our goal of getting the most work done, with the greatest safety and quality.

ANDREW REVELL
I’m Andrew Revell, proprietor of Avocet Marine. I’m a native of Norfolk, Virginia. My family has had a strong connection to the local shipyards for generations. I started work in the yards as a temporary laborer and have since done everything from clean and fire watch to managing large electrical installs and troubleshooting complex electrical systems. I understand that our industry, which has been the life blood of our community for centuries, faces new challenges such as maintaining a highly skilled workforce, incorporating technological advancement at an ever-increasing pace, and facing rising global competition and security risks. At Avocet we recognize these challenges and believe the solution lies in maintaining the old-fashioned work ethic that has characterized our industry for generations, while developing new solutions with a forward-thinking and innovative approach. I look forward to building strong relationships with industry partners and customers as we face these challenges and move forward together.
